Events CalendarUPCOMING EVENTSBarn Beach Reserve hosts exciting, interactive, hands-on discovery programs for children and adults. Focused on nature, art, and environmental awareness, our programs include discovery classes, field trips and tours, discussion groups, and special presentations. Adults & Family EventsWednesday, July 1, 5:30-7:30 PM, in the Barn This documentary, created as a non-profit project in affiliation with the Chelan Douglas Land Trust in Wenatchee, Washington, will offer a compelling, picturesque and action-packed entree into the vital, but all-too-often lackluster world of public land management. By raising awareness of the issues in this way, we hope to spur further participation among Americans in the important work of determining the future of America's precious natural resources. We are fully committed to bringing this story to life and putting these vital social and environmental issues in front of the public in a fresh, new way. Join us in viewing the Trailer of Pedal-Driven by Howell at the Moon Productions, sponsored by Barn Beach Reserve. Friday, July 10, 7 PM, in the Barn
John Hutchinson, Chairman of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, in Scotland,is eager to describe the steps his community took to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. The Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust is a unique partnership between the residents of Eigg, The Highland Council, and The Scottish Wildlife Trust. They are the only finalist in Scotland in the running to win the UK Big Green Challenge, which will secure a substantial monetary prize for their community. John wants to share the ideas his community implemented, including the development of a whole-island grid for power generation from wind, hydro and solar, which made their diesel generators obsolete. Friday, July 31, 7-9 PM, in the Barn Weather in the Pacific Northwest is some of the most fascinating in the United States. We experience world-record winter snows, strong non-tropical storms, and can travel from desert to rain forest in a few hours. Local weather features dominate the landscape, from the Puget Sound convergence zone and winds along the Washington Coast, to blasts through the Columbia Gorge and the high desert of southern Oregon. Dr. Mass tells the story of complex NW weather in terms the layperson can understand and use. Cliff Mass, professor of atmospheric sciences at the University of Washington, is a weekly guest on KUOW radio and the preeminent authority on Northwest weather. He has published dozens of articles on Northwest weather and leads the regional development of advanced weather prediction tools. He will be visiting Leavenworth to discuss the topic of his new book, "The Weather of the Pacific Northwest," and will preside at a book signing on Saturday. In partnership with A Book For All Seasons. Tuesday, August 11, 7 PM, in the Barn Learning about life in an Indian cult, working as a Bollywood movie extra, experiencing elephant polo, planting trees across India, and climbing misadventures in the Himalayas of Nepal...These are just a few of the highlights of Washington mountaineer John Miller's eight-month expedition to the Indian subcontinent in search of adventure. John, a Dancing Coyote Camp (Sammamish) teacher, will share these amazing stories, and more, and show some truly incredible photographs from Nepal and various locations in India. He also will incorporate some readings from his yet-to-be-published memoirs. You are invited to join us for this family-friendly evening of storytelling and slides.
